Air Travel - For better or worse...

To work with responsible tourism and simultaneously selling flights, often raises many eyebrows. The question arises quickly when one mentions it. "How can you call yourself responsible and at the same time sell air travel?"

The issue is partly justified, but also very short-sighted and not thoroughly considered.

Of course, we hope that ordinary people should consider limiting their air travel seen on the whole, to fly only when necessary and when other alternatives are not available. When you travel far one can of course stay away longer instead of doing a few longer trips in less time. And when we travel locally and at home, we can choose the train and local public transport instead of flying or car.

However, the transport component is only part of the whole. And to answer the question, you also have to see the big picture and need. First of all, why do we travel and what is the need? Is it just airfare that can make a trip not responsible? What chance does the individual have to be able to influence?

Fair Travel believes that the need to travel is deeply rooted in us and we want to get away from reality to experience something new and to relax.

Many countries in the world, especially poorer countries, have its main income from tourism and what would happen to them if we would stop to visit them?

On the journey there are many factors that we can affect, which actually makes a journey not responsible. But a trip to Peru is difficult to do without air travel, however it is possible to influence the choice of means of transport, choice of hotels and choice of products upon arrival.

As far as air component, we can offset emissions through various projects, which also Fair Travel can assist on, for you to find the right option. However, this never fully compensate the emission and it is not the solution to the problem. We believe that the major responsibility for this lie on the airlines themselves and the world's nations. That kerosene is not taxed is one example, that it isn’t a part of the international trade of carbon emission allowances is another, along with much else.

You as an individual shall travel and experience the wonderful scenery, culture, environment and wildlife with a good conscience. Affect what you can influence, begin with what is near you, which means that in your own direct sphere and surroundings. Buy locally produced, use public transport to go to work, set up your own personal travel policy and recycle your waste. If we start with small steps, they will lead to larger steps in the future!
