What is Sustainable Tourism?

What does the word sustainability actually mean? It is without a doubt a word being used a lot in different aspects, but the question is if its meaning is fully understood and comprehended?

Sustainability is a powerful word that should be used with respect and in the right context. Has the word and term become another buzzword that we're diluting? Is the complexity of the problem? Are we facing a paradigm shift or yet another buzzword that is slowly being killed off without any prominent influence and success?

Some definitions and guidance

Sustainable Development
Sustainable development is a growth that satisfies today's needs without jeopardizing the prospects of the future generations to meet their needs.
Bruntland-report 1987, World Commission on Environment and Development

Sustainable development consists of three mutually interdependent parts:
• Ecological sustainability - is about long-term conservation of water, soil and ecosystems' productive capacity and to reduce the impact on environment and human health to "manageable" levels.
• Social sustainability - is about building a long-term stable and dynamic society where basic human needs are met.
• Economic sustainability - is to conserve human and material resources in the long term.

Per Jacobsson "Mot ett hållbart Samhälle", KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Sustainable Tourism
“tourism which leads to management of all resources in such a way that economic, social and aesthetic needs can be fulfilled while maintaining cultural integrity, essential ecological processes, biological diversity and life support systems.”

World Tourism Organization (WTO)
