Jeppe debate the future of Swedish Tourism at Almedalen

July 4, 2018 By Jeppe 2 Comments

This week is the “Almedalsveckan”, an event and meeting place in Visby, Gotland, with an unusual combination of political summit and openness. It is also associated with an informal atmosphere, intimacy, discussion, democracy, seminars and further education and training.

Jeppe was invited to participate in a panel discussion on the topic “Can we make Swedish tourism more sustainable by upscaling successful examples”. The panel discussion was organized by VISITA and included participants from Hotell S:t Clemens, Långbro Värdshus, Fazer Food Services, WWF and Chalmers University of Technology.

The discussion covered sub-topics such as food waste, sustainable travel and energy efficiency, and lasted 45 min in front of a filled courtyard with an enthusiastic audience.

Jeppe finished off with the message, “Sweden has got all the potential to become a successful and sustainable tourism destination, but in order to get there we need to respect the fact that it is a fairly young and inexperienced destination that has lots to learn. Sweden needs to learn from the successful and experienced destinations around the world but also do its homework when if comes to unsuccessful destinations. It requires cooperation and strong political leadership with cross-sector decisions in order to facilitate the maximum possibilities for this fast-growing industry. We need to be bold and we need to be brave. And we need to decide who we want to be and what sort of clients we wish to attract. We need to do this and the time is now.”

BarCamp 24-25 september

June 17, 2015 By Jeppe Leave a Comment

Green Tourism Camp 2014

March 26, 2014 By Jeppe Leave a Comment

Green-Tourism-Green-Camp-2014Become part of Scandinavia’s second green tourism CAMP, a creative and innovative barcamp with a focus on Sustainability in the Tourism, Hotel, and Event industries.

You could also call it an “unconference”, which is why this type of meeting is so suitable for bringing people together on sustainable development, due to its small foot print. Since 2009, the tourism industry in Sigtuna has worked together for sustainable development with a common vision – that together we will make a difference. As Sweden’s fourth largest hotel industry and home to Sweden’s largest airport, Stockholm Arlanda, Sigtuna recognizes its particular responsibility.

Read more about the event here and don’t forget to register. I hope to see you there!

The full description can be downloaded here in English and in Swedish.

TREBLE workshop in Gothenburg

March 22, 2014 By Jeppe Leave a Comment

TREBLE project invited stakeholders and those interested in sustainability issues in the tourism industry, to a half-day workshop in Gothenburg during the TUR2014 Expo.

This was the first workshop of the project, and gathered some 30 participants, listening in to inspiring presentations from award-winning Swedish ecotourism companies Wild Sweden and Urnatur together with TREBLE partners BEF Lithuania, CBSS, Estonian Ecotourism Association and Fair Travel. The topic of the workshop was sustainable tourism development within the Baltic Sea Region, and though the participation numbers were a bit low, the discussions that followed were all very energetic, inspirational and thoughtful.

One participant concluded:

BTC-FIN-S - 06“The academia need to translate their message into “normal language” and put it into common sense and as a part of an integrated system in order to change the mindset and attitude of people and politicians. There is a need for Science and academia but the dialogue needs to be more efficient in order for politicians to set sound and reasonable policies, which are effective and understandable. Take the knowledge and put it into common sense for people. We do not need to speak about eco etc. start to speak about a real modern lifestyle. The message should be: Modern people do no travel so much, they do not waste energy, they eat healthy and sell this as a lifestyle – We need to rethink the idea of a modern human”

More workshops are to come and given the passion shown in the first workshop, it will be very interesting to see what might come of the rest of the activities organized under the TREBLE banner.

TREBLE is a project based on the tourism sector to contribute to the EU 2020 and European Blue Growth agenda through sustainable growth, and to bring forward sustainable rural development and employment opportunities in the Baltic Sea Region. Read the full description of it here.
