Is it more important to take care of the tourists than the local community?

Smile at the tourists in TenerifeSwedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet reports about the campaign Teneriffa Buena Gente, where the locals on the islands are advised to become more friendly towards the visitors of the island. One of the most important requests is to always smile at the tourists.

The article conclude the importance of having educated employees within the tourism industry and to inform about the importance of tourism for the local economy. Could it possibly be that the reason to why the islanders aren’t smiling for the tourists, is due to them not seeing enough benefit from tourism? How involved are the locals in the monitoring of tourism on Tenerife?

Barcelona has identified a new kind of tourist problem: Too many of them!

Port side of Barceloneta from Montjuic hill, CataloniaOn the 31st May, a record 31,000 tourists arrived by boat in Barcelona. Some were embarking or disembarking passengers, others dropped off thousands of tourists to spend a day in the Catalan capital.

“I don’t know one resident in Barcelona that in some way doesn’t feel like there’s something wrong with the amount of people who come here every year,”

The city’s 1.6 million residents have seen the number of visitors to the city skyrocket from 1.7 million in 1990 to more than 7.4 million in 2012. Growing numbers of tourists is affecting many places around the world. How does this influence the locals?

Happy 20th Birthday to Wilderness Explorers!

20th anniversary celebration - Wilderness ExplorersRepresented partner Wilderness Explorers celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2014. Wilderness Explorers has operated in Georgetown for 20 years now and the anniversary was celebrated at Cara Lodge in, Georgetown on the 6th June 2014.

“Guyana President Donald Ramotar has assured Wilderness Explorers that the Government would ‘be with the company’ in its quest to maximise its growth in the industry and make it one of the most important in our country.”

With an estimated 2500 annual tourists visiting Guyana each year, Wilderness Explorers has been an incremental instrument in putting Guyana on the global tourist map. These numbers can only increase as more and more people start to understand the wonders hidden in this forgotten gem on the northern shores of South America.

The President concluded during the celebrations:
“We still have some challenges to face, and I think we have made some sound investments in an industry that is growing; and as it gets more developed, mankind will want to feel the wonders of nature, and that is why it is important to preserve our environment.”

The Global tourism keeps on growing

WTTC-Report-2013Tourism’s contribution to the World economy keeps growing, for the 4th year in a row according to the latest report from the World Travel and Tourism Council.

According to the WTTC travel contributed with 9.5% of the global GDP in 2013, employing close to 266 million people.

The biggest growth comes from travellers of China, Russia, Brazil, Indonesia, Turkey and Egypt. Read the full report here.
